Before dyeing your hair, an allergy test MUST be carried out 48 hours before.
You will find all the information on how to carry out the allergy alert test on the leaflet inside your hair dye box or you can find ‘How To’ videos on the Be Colour Safe website: Allergy Alert | Hair Allergy Test | Be Colour Safe
Always refer to the colourant box for safety instructions
HOW TO UNDERSTAND YOUR SKIN TONE AND NATURAL HAIR
It all comes down to personal preference but there are some factors that can help you pick a complimentary shade:
• Skin undertones:
If your veins are predominantly green, you have a warm undertone.
Predominantly blue - a cool undertone.
A balance of both tends to mean you have a neutral undertone. Neutral undertones tend to compliment all colours.
• Jewellery preference: Do you prefer to wear gold or silver jewellery? If you prefer gold, chances are you prefer a warmer shade and vice versa.
• Eye colour: Cool eye colours such as dark brown, blue and some greens will be best complimented with a cool hair shade. Whereas, hazel’s, greens, reddish brown will pop with a warmer colour.
If you have cooler undertones, you may prefer more ashy and pearlescent shades. If you have warmer undertones, you may prefer more golden reflects.
HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR SHADE?
To select a box dye best suited for your hair colour, it is essential to have a clear idea of your current hair colour and the desired end colour result. For best results, we recommend choosing a colour that is 1 to 2 levels up or down from your hair colour -going more than 2 shades lighter may emphasise strong undertones and going darker can prevent any reflect from showing.
We identify hair colour on a scale from 1 to 10, 1 being the darkest and 10 being the lightest.
If you already know the colour you are aiming for, you can refer to the swatches on the back of the hair colour pack.
Decide if you want a warm or cool undertone and remember that the first number is always the BASE and the second number is the TONE. If the shade on the Box has 3 numbers, the intensity of the undertone is stronger.
CAN I USE SHAMPOO OR CONDITIONER AFTER COLOURING?
Directly after dyeing your hair rinse the colour out until the water runs clear with cool water (hot water can make it fade faster!). Then follow up with the conditioning product that is included in all our hair care kits for that luxurious finish as if you just had it done professionally! Take a look at our Elvive Coloured Hair page to see which of our products are tailored to help your colour last longer. After a few weeks when roots start to grow you can use our temporary Magic Root touch up spray for a quick fix of any regrowth, greys, or hair emergency!
HOW MUCH HAIR DYE DO I NEED?
The amount of product required to colour your hair depends on:
hair length
hair thickness
desired result
For root touch ups, you will require a minimal amount of product compared to a full head coverage. The hair that sits anywhere lower than the shoulders or is especially thick at least 2 boxes could be required.
We recommend mixing one box at a time to preserve the integrity of the formula. If you are not sure always go with slightly more as you do not want to run out half-way through!
IS IT POSSIBLE TO MIX SHADES?
To keep the integrity of the formula, it is recommended you stick to the measurements stated in your kit.
If you are looking to have an ombre or highlighted look of your hair, you can blend shades no more than 2-3 shades lighter or darker than each other.
WHY IS MY HAIR BRASSY AFTER BLEACH?
Whenever you dye your hair lighter your natural hair can leave behind a warm residual colour, it is normal for reddish and orange tones to appear when dark hair has been lifted to a lighter shade but is sometimes not desired when wanting to achieve an ashy or cool colour result.
For example, trying to go from dark blonde to a light platinum colour will leave an orange undercoat because these are the undercoats that your hair naturally has.
Similarly, if you have medium brown hair and try to dye it light blonde it will leave your hair with red undercoats.
Recently we launched two new post-bleach Toners! They will neutralise unwanted brassy tones in 5 minutes and will last up to 4 weeks. This is the perfect routine after bleaching your hair.
It is advisable to wait 2-3 weeks after procedures such as keratin/perm. These procedures can stress your hair and seal the cuticles with stubborn chemicals, making it difficult for the hair to absorb colour evenly.
HOW SHOULD I COLOUR IF MY HAIR IS GREASY?
If your hair is greasy, it is recommended to wash it 1 or 2 days before colouring their hair. Hair that is excessively greasy could potentially cause a slight shift in colour.
Avoid applying conditioner to the scalp; focus only on the lengths and ends. Use Elvive Hydra Pure which helps with oily roots.

WHERE SHOULD I START APPLYING THE DYE - MY ROOTS OR LENGTHS?
This all depends on your desired look.
In most cases you should start with the roots because the roots will need more time to process and then apply the product to your lengths.
HOWEVER, when using bleach you should start with your lengths first, then the roots as the heat from your scalp can make the product develop faster.
Always refer to the instructions found in your leaflet!
HOW TO AVOID BUILD UP OF COLOUR?
Colour build-up occurs when dye is applied all over the head repeatedly (for both permanent and semi-permanent colour).
Apply the colour to your roots evenly and you can blend it to your length or apply the rest of the product for a quick colour refresh.
Always refer to the instructions found in your leaflet!
HOW TO BE SURE THAT ALL SIDES COLOURED EQUALLY?
• Start with sectioning your hair into small sections and brush the hair to take out any knots.
• Apply the dye either on roots or lengths as recommended in your leaflet or depending on your desired look.
• Using a comb, brush the dye through the hair to blend it in thoroughly. You can also use your fingers to massage the product into your hair.
• Ensure the hair is fully saturated all over - you can use two mirrors to check the back of your head, one placed behind you and one handheld mirror, or you can ask someone to help you!
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY HAIR IS GOING TOO DARK?
• Rinse the hair immediately to stop the hair from developing further.
• Use shampoo to wash out the product.
• Wait a few days before dying your hair as the colour may appear darker initially, but it may fade after a few washes. Give yourself a few days before deciding if you need to take further action.
• To go lighter you will most likely have to use a product that can lift your hair such as our Preference Bleach (Lifts up to 9 levels) or the Le Blonding range (Lifts up to 3 Levels) recommended for blonde shades. Or you can use the Bleach for darker hair and then re-apply the desired colour over top.
Always perform a strand test in the back of your head to see how the colour will turn out before fully committing to dyeing your full head of hair.
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY HAIR IS GOING TOO LIGHT?
• Rinse the hair immediately to stop the hair from developing further.
• Use shampoo to wash out the product.
• You can apply our new toners for blonde hair to neutralise any unwanted brassy tones.
• If you are wanting to go darker you can apply the colour from a darker kit.
For example, from light brown to dark brown.
However, going from blonde to dark brown requires more steps. The hair needs a base, so you may need to first dye your hair light brown and only then you can go darker brown because if you go directly from blonde to dark brown you will see more orange and red undertones which may not be desired.
Always perform a strand test in the back of your head to see how the colour will turn out before fully committing to dyeing your full head of hair.
HOW LONG SHOULD I WAIT BEFORE COLOURING AFTER BLEACHING MY HAIR?
It is not recommended to use colour straight after bleaching. Allow you hair to regain some moisture and strength.
Assess the condition of your hair before applying dye. If your hair feels dry, brittle, or damaged it may be best to wait as this can damage your hair more or even create a patchy result.
If your hair feels dry, make sure to condition your hair during the waiting period to restore some moisture.
It is important to prioritize your hair health and take necessary precautions to minimize damage. Using more bleach or colour whilst your hair is in poor condition will cause more damage.
Waiting will be your best bet and in the meantime, you can use Magic Retouch Spray for a hair transformation to more of your desired look or to conceal any imperfections in your hair!
