Causes of dull skin
Build-up of dead skin cells
Your skin is constantly renewing its cells, shedding up to 40,000 cells per day. While the new cells will normally push away the old ones, you can sometimes end up with a build-up of dead skin cells that look dry, tired, or flaky. While this is completely normal, there are also steps you can take to reduce this build-up. For example, exfoliating regularly gives your skin a little helping hand and removes old cells and everyday dust and dirt to let your new and fresh skin cells shine through.
Dryness and dehydration
First of all, it’s important to understand the difference between dry and dehydrated skin. Dry skin is a skin type and often means the skin doesn’t produce many natural oils. This can lead to redness, flaking and dehydration. While it might be a natural occurrence, it can be counterbalanced with skin products that are rich in plant oils – especially those that are easily absorbed. Dehydration, on the other hand, can affect all skin types. It simply means the skin lacks water and can be tackled with hydrating skincare products that include ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, which locks in moisture.
Ageing
Over the years, the body naturally slows down production of proteins such as elastin and collagen. As these help with plumping skin for a youthful appearance, the slower production means your skin can start to appear duller as you age. Ageing also impacts the speed at which your body can restore and repair skin cells, which can mean you’re left with dead cells. You can find plenty of skin care products that help restore fullness and refresh your skin, bringing back your natural glow and younger-looking skin.
Sun damage
Sun damage presents a number of risks to your skin – one being that it can slow down the rate at which cells are able to turn over. This means you’re often left with dry, dead skin cells that can make your skin look duller and less refreshed. This is just one of the many reasons it’s essential to make sure you’re wearing SPF every day.
How to rejuvenate dull skin
Be gentle
Harsh scrubs and drying soaps can do more harm than good, leaving your skin irritated and inflamed and causing longer term damage. Treat your skin gently with soothing products that cleanse without stripping the skin of its natural defences. Our Classic Micellar Water is formulated with Pro-Vitamin B5, known for its restoring properties, and is perfect for removing makeup without the need for rubbing or scrubbing.
Avoid hot water
Hot water might seem soothing but in reality, it can strip your skin of its natural oils. This can leave your skin feeling dry and irritated. Instead, opt for lukewarm water and make sure to finish up with a moisturiser.
Use a serum
If you’re going to add one product to your skincare routine, make it an anti-ageing serum. Our Midnight Serum helps aid overnight skin cell renewal as well as strengthening your skin’s natural barrier during the day. This reduces the impact of common environmental stressors such as UV rays and pollution.
Use a face mask
To give your skin a regular boost, treat yourself to an at-home face mask 2 – 3 times a week. Our Filler Renew Hyaluronic Mask has been specially formulated for dull and mature skin with a combination of imperial peony and neo-calcium.
